Ten years ago the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (DAHR) has established the Foundation for School, an institution called upon to sustain first of all the Hungarian-language education in Romania. The Curatorial Board of Foundation for School (registered with a head office in Cluj) started its activity on April 1996. The County Court of Cluj has registered the foundation as a corporate body under the 1996/76/PJ mark. More…

During an activity of one decade, the social grant program was considered one of the main tasks of the Foundation for School. The goal of the grant program (considered a priority) is to reduce the dropout of the Hungarian students from Romania by improving their financial situation. From the first moment, realizing the importance of this program – which gives place and opportunity for the Hungarian-language university students from Romania to present their scientific achievements, to compare their knowledge and meet fellow researchers from the same field of science – the Foundation for School had an optimistic approach towards the invitation of the National Hungarian Student Association (NHSA), and took over the financing of the third prize. In 2001, for easing the housing problems of ethnic Hungarian intellectuals, especially those of the university lecturers, the Foundation for School has announced its loan program for buying a house/flat. The aim is to provide those university lecturers who are not real estate owners in Cluj an extra aid for supplementing their private funds for house/flat acquisition.

At the end of the ’90s, for raising the quality of Hungarian-language university education, the Foundation for School has initiated a complex project for constructing a building-complex in Cluj that would host a modern vocational center and teacher-flats.

This is the first and only Hungarian state subsidy allowed by the Act LXII of 2001 on Hungarians Living in Neighbor Countries that reaches families without a mediator; yearly, its sum for Transylvania reaches 3 billion HUF. Since the 2003-2004 academic year, the Foundation for School is the entitled dealer of the “Pedagogical-Educational and Textbook-School Equipment” grant. All underage pupils and high-school/university students that are studying partly or totally in Hungarian language on a primary, secondary or high/university level in a Romanian educational institution are entitled to this grant.

Being invited by the Apáczai Public Foundation from Budapest, the Foundation for School became the manager of the Apáczai Alumnus Grant. In this particular case, being the manager of the grant, the foundation assumed many tasks and responsibilities. Applications were available during three academic years. More…

This program was initiated by the Ministry of Education and Culture Hungary and the Márton Áron Professional College, and the Foundation for School was appointed to manage it during the 2004-2005 and 2005- 2006 academic years. Applicants could be university full time lecturers teaching partly or totally in Hungarian language in one of the Romanian higher education institutions – universities. More…

During its one decade of existence, beside the above-mentioned grants, the Foundation for School has initiated and managed many other programs meant to increase the quality of Hungarian-language teaching in Romania and its competitiveness, and to raise the living conditions of teachers.
